Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Multi-Folding Phone

South Korean insider reports Samsung is working on a multi-foldable smartphone with horizontal and vertical hinges. This is what the device looks like.

Samsung manages to achieve impressive sales figures with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3. The folding models have been sold worldwide no less than 5 times as often as their predecessors, according to the manufacturer. It is expected that Samsung will continue to focus strongly on phones with flexible screens in the coming years, in order to maintain its dominant market position. To make this possible, it will have to continue to innovate, finally, more and more manufacturers are entering the market of foldable phones.

A month ago, LetsGoDigital reported on a special multi-foldable Galaxy smartphone based on a patent that Samsung has applied for. It is a very unique device that can be folded both horizontally and vertically – so we have renamed this smartphone the ‘Galaxy Z Multi Fold’.

It didn’t take long before LetsGoDigital’s editors were approached by South Korean Dohyun Kim to say that this unique model is actually under development.

Dohyun Kim managed to gain a lot of fame via Twitter during the Galaxy S22 series. The South Koreans were the first to put a multitude of official presentation sheets online so that both the design and all the specs became known.

According to Dohyun Kim, Samsung Electronics is developing a smartphone with both a horizontal and a vertical hinge. When you fold the phone vertically, the screen is on the outside. By folding the device horizontally, the screen is on the inside – so the screen remains optimally protected when you carry the device with you.

The features that Dohyun Kim mentions correspond exactly to the patent that LetsGoDigital handled last month. The multi-foldable smartphone that Samsung is developing looks very similar or maybe even exactly the same, according to the South Korean.

Based on this information, graphic designer Parvez Khan, aka Technizo Concept, commissioned LetsGoDigital to create a series of product renders of this unique folding phone, based on the patent. The YouTube video below has also been designed by Technizo Concept to get a better picture of this multi-foldable device.

In the meantime, Dohyun Kim has been able to gather even more information about this special device. The overall dimensions of the Multi Fold phone in development are slightly larger than the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

That sounds very plausible, after all, it can increase productivity. In addition, folding phones are already available with a larger display than the 7.6” screen of the Z Fold 3 – think for example of the Huawei Mate X2 and the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold, both of which have an 8” flexible screen.

Samsung is also considering designing a new user interface for the Galaxy Z Multi-Fold smartphone, said Dohyun Kim. This will undoubtedly improve the overall user experience. The company has already paid extensive attention to this in the existing folding designs, such as the handy Flex mode.

The South Korean manufacturer is also thinking about using a keyboard. The display can be folded in multiple ways, which also creates multiple user modes. You can easily place the device like a laptop. The lower screen part can then show the operation, such as a virtual keyboard, while the top screen part shows the content.

Compatible with S Pen

No information is known about compatibility with the S Pen yet. However, it is very likely that Samsung will also provide this device with stylus pen support. The Samsung Z Fold 3 is currently the only foldable smartphone that can be used with Samsung’s S Pen. This makes the device extra versatile.

However, the current Z Fold does not have a stylus pen compartment. Instead, there are cases available with an S Pen pocket to store the stylus. Therefore, the stylus pen is not included as a standard. There is a good chance that this will change with the Galaxy Z Fold 4, which is expected in mid-2022 – just as the Galaxy S22 Ultra is also equipped with an S Pen compartment for the first time.

Compatible with S Pen

With the multi-foldable smartphone, however, it will be a lot more difficult to build in a stylus compartment. Because the device can be folded both horizontally and vertically, there is simply not enough space available in the housing for a long S Pen.

Samsung may decide to develop a case, as it has done for the Z Fold 3. Alternatively, it could also apply a magnetic strip to the back of the device, as is the case with the brand’s tablets – think of the Galaxy Tab S8 series, for example.

Triple camera and under-display selfie camera

Regarding the camera system, the patent documentation talks about the integration of an under-display camera and a triple-camera system on the back. The Z Fold 3 is the brand’s first folding phone where the selfie camera is placed below the screen.

The image quality of this 4MP camera leaves much to be desired. However, it seems to be only a matter of time before the photo and video quality of under-display cameras become comparable to that of a punch-hole camera system.

Triple camera and under-display selfie camera

In addition, this Galaxy Z Multi Fold smartphone offers the possibility to take selfies with the main camera. As a result, the quality of the under-display camera suddenly becomes of secondary importance.

Folding the phone vertically (outwards) actually creates a dual-screen smartphone – with part of the screen surface remaining available from the back. This screen area can be used as a viewfinder while taking photos and video recordings with the triple camera.

Foldable inwards and outwards

Because this multi-foldable telephone can be folded both inwards and outwards, it is no longer necessary to build a separate front display. Folding the smartphone vertically creates a double-sided phone, which is also relatively compact. In fact, this device offers all the advantages of the Huawei Mate X and the Samsung Galaxy Fold together.

In addition, costs can be saved if a separate cover screen does not have to be integrated. Also, one less camera needs to be built in, without this being at the expense of functionality. Of course, an extra hinge has to be built in, so don’t expect this device to be cheaper than the Z Fold 3.

When you’re done, you simply close the device, just like you would close a laptop. The entire screen surface is then safely stored in the housing and is thus optimally protected against scratches and bumps.

Foldable inwards and outwards

Because the device is a lot more compact than a conventional laptop, you can easily take the mobile device with you – without having to carry a separate bag. With this design, Samsung manages to process a large tablet screen, a double-sided telephone and a small laptop in one device. That makes this Galaxy Z Multi Fold particularly versatile.

Possible disadvantages of this design

However, there are also disadvantages to consider. Although Samsung has provided the Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 with a very solid hinge, the folding seam is still clearly visible. In fact, the folding line can also be felt fairly well, as we concluded in our Samsung Z Fold 3 review. The phone also does not always respond well to touch input that is entered directly on the folding seam.

The Multi Fold construction does not involve one but two folding lines. It is hoped that Samsung will first make this folding seam less noticeable and visible, to prevent four squares from appearing later, as it were.

Possible disadvantages of this design

Other manufacturers are also struggling with this problem. After the introduction of the current Galaxy Z series models, some manufacturers have opted for a different type of hinge, so that the screen is folded at a less sharp angle. Think of the Oppo Find N and the Huawei P50 Pocket. This makes the folding seam less visible with these devices. However, it is not yet optimal, because under certain lighting conditions it seems that two folding seams are visible.

It is expected that the folded seam will also be less visible on the 4th generation Z Fold and Z Flip devices. However, it is still unknown which solution Samsung has found for this.

Another potential drawback is water resistance. The 3rd generation Galaxy Z smartphones are the first and as yet only foldable models that are dust and water-resistant, according to the IP67 standard. In view of the complexity surrounding the moving hinge, this is a very good performance. It remains to be seen whether such a multi-foldable smartphone with a double hinge can also be made water-resistant.

I am also very curious about what optional accessories Samsung will release for this model. I am mainly talking about the type of covers. Because the smartphone can be folded both inwards and outwards, it will not be easy to create a matching phone case for this. Samsung may see an opportunity to make a case that consists of two parts – as we know from the Z Flip. Or the company opts for a kind of Envelope cover, as we know from the Mate XS.

Samsung Galaxy Z Multi Fold

No information is yet available about the Galaxy Z Multi Fold processor and the software. A smartphone that will undoubtedly be marketed as a real powerhouse. You can therefore assume that Samsung will apply the latest and most powerful chipset of the moment. Which processor it will be will depend on when the device is released.

Galaxy Z Multi Fold

This also applies to the software. The Galaxy Z Multi Fold will undoubtedly run on the latest Android variant, in combination with the One UI from Samsung. New modes should further enrich the user experience.

Of course, the battery capacity is also important. It is hoped that Samsung will also provide this versatile device with a powerful battery. The Z Fold 3’s 4,400 mAh dual-cell battery lasts about 10 hours on average. That is sufficient, but not particularly long.

The same applies to the charging options. The phone supports 25W Fast Charging / 10W Wireless charging. Incidentally, it is in line with expectations that the 2022 model will offer 45W support – as is also the case with the S22U.

When Samsung will present its first multi-foldable smartphone remains unknown for the time being. The device is still in the development phase. It is therefore not inconceivable that it will take quite some time before the general public can become acquainted with this extremely versatile foldable.

Samsung will probably first present its very first rollable smartphone before that time. The Galaxy Z Slide has been talked about online for quite some time. According to rumours from South Korea, this device should arrive in 2022. In any case, there are still plenty of innovative Samsung phones to look forward to!
